What My Plants Need Right Now
Plant care changes with the seasons. These are the things I’m currently paying attention to as summer begins to wind down in Germany.
Test the Soil First
Fittonia, Coleus and Begonia need checking more often, while the Jade and Kalanchoes should dry before watering.
Bright but Gentle Light
I keep most plants in bright indirect light and protect tender leaves from intense afternoon sunshine.
Protect Sensitive Leaves
I watch tropical plants for dry or crispy leaf edges, especially when indoor air becomes less humid.
Inspect Leaves and Stems
Plants that have spent time outdoors are checked carefully for pests before being brought back inside.

Cut below a healthy node and place the node in water while keeping the leaves above the surface.

Watching the Cooler Summer Nights
As nighttime temperatures began falling, I started watching the forecast more carefully. Sensitive plants are brought back inside before the nights become too cool.
Checking the Soil Before Watering
One of my most useful lessons has been to check each plant’s soil instead of watering the entire collection on the same fixed schedule.
